Safety Science
A hands on investigation.
Aim
To allow students to study and handle materials not normally available to them. The objects and materials have specific functions to assist in the safer use of roads by all road users. Some of the objects are used for crash prevention whilst others aid secondary safety or reduce the severity of injuries.
Objectives
By studying the objects and their technical/scientific properties students will be gaining experience in investigating materials and practical application within a Road Safety context.
We also hope to encourage them in considering their own vulnerability and the coping strategies available to them in their own road user behaviour.
Resources Required
1 class at anyone timeslit in to 10 groups (approximately 3 students per group is ideal)
1 Safety science resource box
To order the resource box, get in touch using the contact form.
Location
Classroom with tables
Plan
The box contains 10 different objects that are displayed 1 -10 on the tables.
The class is divided in to 10 different groups and each group is allocated an object.
Each group is given a clipboard with the question sheets and rotate around each object at 2 – 3 minute intervals completing the questions for each object.
Once all objects have been visited by each group. Feedback and answers can follow in the whole group. Scores for each answer can be awarded if required.
Student Learning Outcomes
Students will have the experience of handling materials not normallly available to them.
Students will gain knowledge of the scientific background and mechanism of road safety materials.
Extra Information
All teacher and student resources are located in the safety science box.
